4 steps to planning your family's next session

Step 1: What to wear

Coordinating

When choosing outfits for children, consider opting for neutral, soft tones that can easily be mixed and matched. Colors like beige, white, soft pastels, and muted earth tones create a calm and stylish look that isn’t overwhelming. These shades are versatile, making it easier to pair different pieces together without worrying about clashing colors. Neutral tones also have the added benefit of being timeless, ensuring that the outfits stay in style season after season.

Comfortability

Comfort should always be a top priority, especially when dressing children. Choose fabrics that are soft to the touch, like cotton or muslin, to ensure the clothes feel good against their skin. Clothes with elastic waistbands, adjustable straps, and easy-to-wear designs will keep kids comfortable and allow for plenty of movement. When kids feel at ease in their clothes, they can focus more on having fun and less on adjusting or feeling restricted.

Considering the Season

Finally, always consider the season when choosing clothing. For warmer weather, lightweight fabrics in soft tones will keep kids cool, while layering in cooler months ensures they stay warm and comfortable. Opt for clothes that suit the weather but also allow for easy adjustments, like jackets or sweaters that can be removed if it gets too warm. A little attention to seasonal needs ensures children are dressed appropriately and comfortably for whatever the day may bring.

This family did an excellent job of coordinating soft tones while prioritizing comfort for their little ones and dressing appropriately for the season.

Step 2: Location

Background

When planning the location for a family photography session, it's important to consider the type of backdrop that best reflects your vision. Do you imagine a lush, green landscape? Perhaps a peaceful setting with water in the background? You might even envision something more unique and personal, like a cozy greenhouse or a fun outing to an ice cream parlor!

Another great option is the comfort of your own home. In-home sessions provide a relaxed, familiar environment and eliminate the pressure of finding the "perfect" location. Whether you're drawn to natural scenery or meaningful spaces, choosing a setting that feels authentic to your family will help create timeless, heartfelt images.

Experience

Choosing a location that your family—especially your children—will enjoy is key to a successful and enjoyable photography session. Select a spot that feels fun, comfortable, and engaging for everyone. Consider sharing a few exciting details ahead of time to build anticipation and enthusiasm, rather than stress or discomfort. When your family feels at ease and looks forward to the experience, it shows in the photos—creating genuine, joyful moments you'll treasure for years to come.

Research & Scout

The best way to know if you've found the ideal location for your family session is to visit it in person. While online photos can be helpful, they don't always capture the true atmosphere of a place. Sometimes a location looks perfect in pictures but feels underwhelming in reality—and other times, you're pleasantly surprised by its beauty when you arrive.

As a parent, I understand that finding the time to scout multiple locations can be challenging. That’s exactly where I come in. I'm here to make the process easier by sharing some of my favorite, tried-and-true spots. All you have to do is choose the one that speaks to you and start getting excited for your session!

Example

Location

Although fall was nearing its end, I guided this family to a beautiful location that showcased the last vibrant oranges and browns of the season. The spot offered a variety of scenic backdrops, adding to the experience and giving their child plenty to explore. This thoughtful choice not only highlighted the beauty of autumn but also made the day enjoyable and engaging for the whole family.

Step 3: Prepare

Talk about it!

Before heading into a family photo session, it's helpful to discuss the experience with your little ones. Let them know what to expect, whether it's posing for pictures or having fun in the moment. Talking to them about the session can ease any nerves and get them excited about being part of the process. Keep it lighthearted and fun, so they feel relaxed and ready to enjoy the experience.

Bring their favorite items

Bringing snacks and toys is always a good idea to keep your little ones entertained and satisfied during the photo session. Snacks can help prevent hunger-induced fussiness, while a favorite toy can provide comfort and even be incorporated into the photos for a personal touch. Having something familiar nearby can make the experience more enjoyable for everyone, ensuring that the kids stay happy and engaged.

Props?

It’s also worth thinking about props that might add to the photoshoot. Simple items like a small pair of shoes, a blanket/basket, or seasonal elements like pumpkins or flowers can add a special touch to the session. Props can bring out the personality of each family member and make the photos feel more unique. Whether it’s a favorite stuffed animal or a fun theme, including props allows for creativity and helps capture memories in a meaningful way.

Preparation

This mama came wonderfully prepared for her session, thinking through every detail to make the experience smooth and enjoyable. She brought everything from snacks to keep everyone content, to tissues for quick clean-ups, showing how thoughtful and organized she was. What made it even more special was the inclusion of sweet, personal props to celebrate her expected little one. These small touches added meaning and personality to the session, helping to tell a beautiful story through the photos.

Step 4: Rest & Nourishment

One of the most helpful things you can do to set your family up for a smooth and enjoyable photo session is to prioritize rest and nourishment, especially for the littlest members. Well-rested kids (and parents!) are generally more relaxed, cooperative, and full of those genuine smiles we’re all hoping to capture. A good nap and a balanced snack beforehand can make a world of difference in everyone’s mood and energy levels. Photo sessions are meant to be fun and lighthearted, not stressful. Giving your little ones a solid foundation before we even begin can really help the session feel more like play than a chore.

Example

Rest & Nourishment

This family scheduled their session for late morning. (after breakfast but before lunchtime) which turned out to be the perfect window. Everyone was well-fed, rested, and in good spirits. To make it even more fun, they planned a special ice cream outing afterward, which gave the little ones something to look forward to and helped keep them excited and engaged throughout the session!

Let's Review

Dress Comfortably and Appropriately:

Comfortable clothing is key for kids to enjoy any activity. Choose soft, breathable fabrics, proper shoes, and layers for weather. When children feel good in what they wear, they’re free to focus on having fun without distractions.

Choose a Fun and Safe Location:

The right location can make all the difference for kids. Choose a spot that’s safe, fun, and allows them to explore. A park, nature trail, or even a kid-friendly greenhouse are all great options. A comfortable, engaging environment helps little ones feel at ease and excited for the session.

Plan Ahead and Prepare:

Kids do best when they know what to expect. Talk about the session ahead of time, and pack essentials like snacks, toys, water, and sunscreen. A little prep goes a long way in keeping things smooth, fun, and stress-free for everyone.

Rest and Eat Well Beforehand:

A good night’s sleep and a healthy, filling meal can make all the difference on session day. Well-rested, well-fed kids have more energy, better moods, and are ready to play, explore, and enjoy the experience to the fullest.
